Each Residential Hall and College is led by a Hall Warden/College Master, who serves as the head of the residential community. The Warden/Master is supported by a team of live-in tutorial staff, which includes Senior Resident Tutors, Resident Tutors and Junior Resident Tutors.
The Tutorial Team plays a critical role in the management and programming of the residences. Their key responsibilities include:
Hall Wardens / College Masters are members of the University's teaching and administrative staff at Assistant Professor level (or equivalent) or above.
The Warden/Master is responsible to the President and Vice-Chancellor and reports to the Dean of Student Affairs. He/She oversees the management and programming of the Hall/College and directs a team of tutors in areas such as admissions, public communications, student development, and residential life. The Warden/Master will provide leadership and direction for the development of the Hall/College in accordance with University policies on residential life.
The Warden/Master shall foster a vibrant residential community that aligns with the University’s mission and vision. He/She will provide dynamic leadership to cultivate a sense of belonging among Hall/College members and promote a positive learning environment in the residential setting.
The Warden/Master will serve as the Hall’s Incident Commander in terms of crisis, coordinating with CEDARS and relevant University departments to ensure effective crisis management and support. A strong focus on student wellness initiatives will be maintained by leading the tutorial team, ensuring that residents receive quality pastoral care and support.
The Warden/Master will oversee the tutorial team and collaborate with the residents to run purposeful programs that facilitate experiential learning and life skills development, preparing students for life beyond the University. Warden/College shall encourage student engagement and participation, enhancing social consciousness and community awareness while developing support functions that nurture the intellectual, social, and cultural growth of residents. He/She is responsible for allocating resources effectively to achieve residential educational goals.
The Warden/Master will enhance community relations by attending events, ensuring professionalism in all engagements, and managing communication platforms in accordance with University guidelines. Efforts will also be made to strengthen ties between current residents and Hall/College alumni through various engagement programs.
The Warden/Master will supervise and support the tutorial team, evaluating performance to ensure the quality of support provided to the Hall/College and the professional development of tutors.
The appointment will be for three years from the date stated above in the first instance and carry a fixed amount honorarium, which is at present $6,300 per month. The Warden/Master will be provided with rent-free accommodation in the Hall/College and will normally be required to reside in the Hall/College except during periods of leave from the University.
Senior Tutors are full-time staff at the University. They are either teaching/research or administrative staff, at the level of Executive Officer/Band E or above.
Senior Resident Tutor (SRT) reports directly to the Warden/Master. He/She plays a pivotal role in supporting the Warden/Master in managing and programming the Hall/College, while leading a team of tutors in key areas such as admissions, public communications, student development, and residential life. He/she is entrusted with fostering the discipline, general morale, and social welfare among members of the Hall/College, ensuring alignment with university policies on residential life and contributing to the ongoing development of the Hall/College.
SRT assists the Warden/Master in leading, facilitating, and promoting the objectives of the Hall/College. He/She supports the Warden/Master in overseeing the tutorial team, offering guidance and fostering collaboration to ensure effective management of Hall/College operations and the well-being of residents.
He/She will assume the acting wardenship/mastership during the Warden/Master’s absence on leave and undertake any additional responsibilities assigned by the Warden/Master to support the Hall/College’s overall mission and continuous development.
SRT plays a critical role in crisis management, responding promptly to emergencies and providing pastoral care and support to residents during challenging times. He/she should assist the Warden/Master in promoting mental health initiatives alongside tutorial team members to enhance residents’ emotional and psychological well-being.
SRT also serves on evening duty rosters, ensuring availability for emergencies and addressing the well-being needs of residents during off-hours.

He/she encourages residents’ active participation and engagement in Hall/College activities, fostering dynamic exchanges with the community through various services and cultivating a culture of active citizenship. He/she will also maintain regular communication with Hall members, offering guidance and advice on a range of Hall/College matters.
SRT ensures professionalism in all engagements and manages communication platforms and publicity in accordance with University guidelines. He/she oversees the High Table Dinner and ensures that high standards are maintained in keeping with University tradition. Efforts will also be made to strengthen connections between current residents and Hall/College alumni through targeted programmes and initiatives.
SRT will supervise the team of tutors to ensure the quality of support provided to the Hall/College and the performance of the team. He/she works closely with the General Office on operational and administrative matters, ensuring effective communication and coordination of activities that impact the Hall/College and its residents.
The appointment carries a monthly honorarium, which is at present HK$3,150 fixed. The appointee will additionally be provided with a rent-free self-contained furnished flat in the Hall/College (but will be responsible for utility charges), free high-table and special function dinners. The appointee will normally be required to reside in the Hall/College.
Resident Tutors are full-time members of the University’s teaching or non-teaching staff; or full-time postgraduate students at HKU.

Junior Fellowship Program at Residential Halls
The halls at the University of Hong Kong (HKU) are encouraged to enhance community engagement initiatives in alignment with the objectives outlined in the recent hall reform. In response to this imperative, the Centre of Development and Resources for Students (CEDARS) is committed to establish a distinctive extracurricular platform that fosters the development of intellectual abilities, interpersonal skills, leadership capacities, and personal growth, thereby cultivating an environment conducive to nurturing future social leaders.
Building on the successful implementation of the Junior Fellowship program within HKU’s Residential Colleges since 2016, we propose to extend this initiative to the hall community. The appointed Junior Fellows will not only spearhead a variety of impactful community projects that serve the broader neighbourhood but will also play an imperative role in cultivating student leaders over the coming years. Therefore, we advocate for the establishment of the Junior Fellowship program with the explicit purpose of organizing innovative within our hall community.
The Junior Fellow position is designed to attract emerging talents with experience in community engagement events. By leveraging their fresh perspectives and insights, alongside the involvement of distinguished and dedicated alumni, we aim to further enrich the hall's culture and reinforce the legacy developed over previous years. This initiative represents a formidable opportunity to enhance our community engagement efforts and to foster a vibrant, collaborative environment among students and residents alike.
Eligibility
The candidate should possess a recognized university degree. Any prospective Junior Fellow is expected to have a highly reputable track record in his/her area of expertise, and/or provided distinguished service at the Hall.
The Junior Fellow reports to the Warden and works with the Tutorial Team and Office to develop programmes in line with the Hall’s mission and objectives.
The Junior Fellow will enhance existing programs in the respective Hall or initiate new programs to actively engage students. He/she required to submit a program plan based on his/her areas of interest at the beginning of his/her term, which should provide educational value to the current Hall education. Such programs may also be expanded to include other members of the University or the wider public as appropriate.
The Junior Fellow will also perform any additional duties as deemed suitable by the Warden.
Nominations and applications are welcome year-round. Shortlisted nominees/applicants will be invited to an interview by a panel formed by members of the Committee and chaired by the Warden.
The appointment is for an initial period of one year. The Junior Fellow will be provided complimentary lodging in a single room but will be responsible for all utility charges. He/She is invited to attend the Hall’s High Table and other communal events free of charge.
